Morrisons to slash price of pork products in order to boost pig farmers hampered by Brexit slowdown
Morrisons is to try and help out British pig farmers by offering cuts of pork at reduced prices.
For the last six weeks the EU has taken substantially less British meat and as a consequence, a pork mountain is building up on British farms, and pig farmers are struggling to find a home for their produce.
Morrisons hopes the offers will boost demand and play a part in helping the farmers out. A quarter of English pigs are based on US farms.
Sophie Throup, head of agriculture at Morrisons, said: “Britain produces some of the finest pig breeds and pork products in the world. But pig farmers are currently facing difficult times.
“We’re British farming’s biggest supermarket customer and feel it’s our duty to help. So we’re introducing knockout deals across our store – and hope this will encourage our customers to help farmers by buying more pork.”
Morrisons has stepped in by slashing pork prices for 10 weeks from 22 February. It hopes the offers will boost demand and play a part in helping the farmers out.
