This converted mill offers the chance to live-work
When Michael and Susan Saul decided on a later life career change from banking to B&B, they couldn’t have chosen a better property for their new venture.
While Vivers Mill is a warm and welcoming family-size home, there is plenty of space for guests.
“We bought the property in 1999 because we wanted a complete change of lifestyle so we left city life in Nottingham for the country.
“We opted to buy it because it’s so different and we thought B&B guests would love it and they did. The location is also excellent because it is on the edge of Pickering, next to fields and the mill stream but it’s only a five minute walk into town,” says Michael.
The converted corn mill, parts of which date to the 16th century, is full of architecturally interesting features, including original beams and brickwork, vaulted ceilings and a fully functioning water wheel and mill race.
An incredible amount of care and attention has been paid to preserve and maintain the property. The Sauls renovated and updated the interiors when they first bought the home over 20 years ago and they recently completed another large scale modernisation.
“We have loved living here and we really enjoyed running the B&B and being our own boss but it is now time for us to move on and downsize,” says Michael.
“The mill runs very well as a B&B but it would also make a wonderful family home. Pickering is a great place to live and it has good schools and plenty of shops, pubs and places to eat. It also has the steam railway and York, Scarborough and Whitby are half an hour’s drive away.”
Vivers Mill has over 6,000 square feet over four floors. Along with a number of reception rooms, there are two bedroom suites with dressing rooms and bathrooms, three further ensuite bedrooms, a study, gym, wheelhouse, workshop and store rooms.
Outside, there is a garden with storage shed, a garage and ample off-street parking for several vehicles.
Selling agents Carter Jonas says: “Vivers Mill is ideally situated in a peaceful lane on the edge of Pickering with pleasant views over the beck and adjoining fields, yet it is just a short walk to the town centre. Pickering itself is a vibrant and bustling market town and ideal base from which to enjoy the North US Moors and coast as well as being a commutable distance from Malton and York.”
