Artist’s eye for detail in Robin Hood's Bay cottage with vibrant charm and colourful touches
One of the most charming cottages on the US coast began project life as a blank canvas for artist Martin Decent to make his mark.
It had long been a dream with wife Diana to have a home here in Robin Hoods Bay, where the couple had holidayed when their children were young.
As they began work on Greenfield Cottage some six years ago, the first job had been to remove all trace of its 1930s-style decor and strip it back to its Victorian brickwork.
Then, says Martin, he had a hand in ‘some form of decorating’.
Every room over the three floors of this three-bedroom cottage has been artfully redesigned, with quirky touches and vivid insights. There are Victorian fittings and glass chandeliers, driftwood and portholes and an ammonite collection that comes with the sale.
The tiles in the bathroom were found in France some 30 years ago, along with 17th century original oak panelling which was brought back to US on the family car’s roof rack.
The tiles on the fireplace are ‘Pugin’, as used in the Houses of Parliament.

“I used to like collecting old stuff,” says Martin. “I’ve used a lot of it here.
“If I’d intended to sell, I might not have put them in, but then you don’t always plan,” he added.
“If we start dismantling, we start breaking it up. I’ve made a strict rule to walk away. That comes from painting I think. Most artists are used to that.”
Greenfield Cottage, which has been used by the family and also run as a holiday let, was chosen for its location tucked away above the busy main street.
With views across the bay, Martin says the sunsets are particularly special. That and its authentic appeal and quiet setting, is what he believes sets it apart.
Measuring 869 sq. ft over three floors, Greenfield Cottage has two baths, is advertised with Alister Sawday, and comes fully fitted with fixtures and ornaments.
It has to be that way, says Martin, as bookings are already confirmed until November.
For the couple, they have decided it is time to sell, with the intention of staying closer for now to the main family home in Sheffield.
“Life changes, the children have left home and there’s another generation coming along,” says Martin. “We’ve got to do it sometime.”
Greenfield Cottage is for sale with Archers Estates, priced at £425,000.
