Sales of electric cars in 2020 were one small bright spot in a difficult year for the automotive industry.

While the market struggled, uptake of EVs continued to rise rapidly and with more new models coming to market and more investment in the supporting infrastructure, it’s a pattern that’s set to continue as we head towards the 2030 petrol and diesel ban.

The good news is that there is now more choice than ever when it comes to EVs and while high-end models still cost well into six figures, there are far more affordable options for buyers on a tighter budget.

Due to recent unexpected changes to the Plug-in Car Grant and the unpredictability around the policy we’ve decided to remove it from our figures so all prices here are before the grant – currently worth £2,500 – is applied.
