Gardening jobs for the week ahead as TV's Gardener's World returns

Spring is in the air and that means it’s one of the most exciting times of the year for gardeners.

It’s a good time to plant summer-flowering bulbs such as canna lilies.

Here are some jobs you can be getting on with if the weather stays kind…

Mulch bare soil in beds and borders, prune bush and shrub roses.

Consider repotting houseplants that appear to be out-growing their containers.

Clean ponds and pond equipment, plant summer-flowering bulbs such as canna lilies (pictured).

Mow the lawn and trim edges.

Hard-prune the likes of Buddleia davidii.

Sow sweet peas outdoors.

Lift and divide big clumps of perennials.

Don’t prune hedges once birds have started nesting, but if the weather is cold, do continue to put out food and fresh water.

Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow-release fertilizer.

Feed roses with special rose feed or balanced fertilizer as they come into growth. And prune them to encourage strong new growth.
